Neuro-QOL bank and scale items for adults and children between 12 adn 18 years of age are currently being translated into Spanish using the FACIT translation methodology. The rigorous methodology uses a universal approach to achieve a Spanish translation that is suitable to a wide range of Spanish-speaking populations both inside and outside of the United States.

The process is as follows:

1. Two native Spanish-speaking professional translators from different countries of origin translate the items and

2. A third native Spanish-speaking professional translator from a third country of origin reconciles the translations;

3. The reconciled version is back-translated by a native English speaking translator who is blind to the original source English version;

4. CORE translation staff compare the source and the back-translated English versions to identify mistranslations;

5. Three bilingual experts select the most appropriate translation for each item or provide alternate translations when necessary, addressing concerns raised by CORE;

6. The items are finalized by a language coordinator;

7. Items are formatted into the target format and then proofread by 2 translators independent of each other;  

8. After proofreading, the items are tested by cognitive debriefing with a sample of 30 Spanish-speaking adults and 30 Spanish-speaking children;

9. After the results of the pre-testing undergo qualitative analysis, the Spanish translations are revised as needed and proofread once again;

10. Finalized Spanish translations are ready for use in Neuro-QOL field testing.

As of January 2008, the Spanish items are undergoing cognitive debriefing in preparation for Field Testing in Phase II.  

The Spanish Neuro-QOL banks and scales will be available for use at the end of Phase II.
